Cold and Wet.

VERY cold and wet

REALLY cold and wet.

Greg, John, Steve, Brad, Kevin and I left Leschi about 9. I was in the mood to do Snoqualmie Falls, then we planned on doing the whole lake but due to weather conditions that was shot down in 2 seconds. About 5 miles into the ride I wanted to turn around. My feet were frozen and wet, my hands hurt and it was pissing down rain.

Greg called me a wussy, (not the EXACT word but you get the idea) so I kept going.

I lost feeling in both feet coming down Juanita hill into Kenmore and I hadn’t felt my fingers since Bellevue (I hate you Greg) but kept on chugging along as really there was nothing else I could do.everyone peeled off about Lake Forest Park and Greg and I rode the rest of the way back to Leschi. We had a small confrontation with a soccer mom though Lake City. She gave two honks and a finger (nice parenting!) and I gave a wave (with all fingers) the best part was when they got caught at the light and we rolled up next to them… Down comes the window and a demand that we ride on the sidewalk where we belong. The sidewalk? How do you figure. Soccer mom explains that her son, must be the kid in the passenger seat, is a “biker” and she knows we aren’t allowed on the road, according to her, Greg and I were blocking traffic for a mile and a half. I apologize, smile and wish her a Merry Christmas only to see her at the next two lights. I didn’t know you could squeal the tires on a dodge mini van, how can people be THAT angry?

When I got to the car I was in full body shiver mode. My hands were blue and I couldn’t feel the gas pedal. I sat on the shower floor trying to rub the feeling back into my feet and realized that was a bad idea. You know how your body hurts if it goes from cold to hot too fast? Uhhh… yeah. I was almost in tears. My feet swelled up, my skin turned dark purple and I vowed to NEVER ride my bike again.

So what did I do when I got dressed and laid down on the couch?

I bought a bicycle. :-)

A 1987 Schwinn Tempo, which just happens to be my very first race bike. I have a NOS 7 spd Dura Ace group that I’ll be throwing on it. Downtube shifters (remember those?), side pull brakes and a 7 speed freewheel. I feel so nostalgic! Having that bike, Dad’s old Klein and the Tandem bring back a lot of memories. Plus they are loads of fun.

Later in the evening, Rosanna, Jodie, John and myself hit El Bistro in Post alley for fabulous food and drinks and then went to the Unexpected Productions “Improv Christmas Carol” Hilarious! Great times with great company.

My hands and feet feel better already.

  • Nice… I still have the side pull brake calipers from my 7 sp Dura Ace group on my current bike. I think they are about 20 years old now…? 15 at least. Shit never stops working so I don’t replace it.
