Mason Lake… the World Championship, rain soaked crash fest of years past smiled on us as we set up at the start line. I brought booties, rain coats, fleece clothing and foot warmers because the weatherman said that the clouds were going to poop on us and maybe even give a little lightning show.

Nothing could be further from the truth. It was beautiful!

I ended up going shorts, short sleave jersey, craft undershirt and arm/knee warmers and it turned out to be the perfect choice.

It was classic Mason Lake, guys shooting off the front from the very first lap (of 5) I covered the first garage attack on lap one then dropped into the middle of the pack until lap 3 where during a lull on the slight incline at the start/finish I attacked while Dustin sat on the front. I expected maybe 1 or 2 guys to jump on me but when I turned around on the downhill the entire pack was coming up so I bagged it and moved back again. Tony took his shots off the front as well as Dustin and Greg but none of the breaks were sticing.

That is, until halfway through lap 4…

A group of 7 got off and for the entire last lap it was Greg and Dustin pulling the pack back up to them. Tony and I were stuck at the back and he was able to pick his way up there, I made it about mid pack before it started getting twisty and got stuck behind what seemed like the entire Wines of Washington squad. Greg and Dustin finally caught the break at about 50 meters to go, Dustin thinks he got 7th, Tony maybe 10th or so and Greg and I finished mid pack.

It turned out to be a great race… no crashes, no rain and a top 10 for Byrne. We were completely out gunned by Garage and Hagens and hopefully we can get some more of our guys in the upcoming races to come help.

Mad props go out to Greg K, Dustin V and Tony B for an awesome job. This is going to be a kick arse season.
