Ravensdale Road Race Report – 3/16/08

Ravensdale Race – 45 miles (was supposed to be 54 but shortened it by a lap)

Bike – BMC SL01 51-35 Q rings x 11-21 Ksyrium SL Wheels.

Breakfast, Ensure, PB&J, water, 5 sport leg pills and a banana

Ride Food – Small bottle of Accelerade, Small bottle of water, 3 gu shots

One word…. *WHEW*

That was a crazy race.

We started with 80 people and ended with about 40. We shelled a good amount on the first three laps MOSTLY because of crashes.

Well hi there Mr. Pot hole! meet Mr. Flimsy bottle cage. When those two get together it’s a dance of the bottles through the pack, usually putting people on the deck at 30 miles an hour. Yup… that’s the story of the day. Now you would think that after the first lap people would pick up on where Mr Pot hole was as too keep themselves up right and their bottles in the cages as to hydrate themselves throughout the race and save their fellow racers from having to dodge stray drink.

Stupid bicycle racers.

Then, on lap 3, an Avanti Racing guy taps a wheel and starts to go down. What’s his first thought? grabbing ME as he goes down. Enough said. I’m still a bit out of my skin about it. Luckily I stayed up. I was pretty scared though.

Anyway, besides the falls it was a great race. Tony and I meandered through the pack with ease, making sure not to do too much work unless we had to. With 1k to go he and I were both in the top 5 but the 2 small rollers before the finish really took their toll. I was wiped out and he and I ended up somewhere between 20th-30th. I think we both accomplished what we wanted to do, ride close to the front, don’t crash, finish well and laugh afterwards.

Oh and a beer. gotta have my beer.

I nailed it all :-)

  • Nice job Brian, sometimes the important victories are the small ones, like not crashing!
